July 8 at 10:45 am: Hear's Crow Storytelling
She is a Storyteller of Longhouse Tales, told in many different ways including Native Sign Language, call and response as well as other traditional styles. She has twice been awarded publishing contracts for her book of poetry and is currently completing a Native children's novel. She brings to life the oral tradition at schools, community centers, Indigenous gatherings, and wherever the stories lead her.
July 17th at 10:45 am: Stories on the Wild Side
Reading and science come together in this fun program blending storytelling with up-close encounters with three live, native, NH wild animals. Animal characters in stories are often very different from real animals, but we can still learn important truths about animals through stories. A Squam Lakes Natural Science Center naturalist will read aloud short stories featuring animals and the natural world, and then introduce one or two of the story’s wild characters. Visits with live animals featured in the tales will challenge kids to separate fact from fiction.
July 22nd at 10:45 am: Currier Museum of Art Teaches
A multimedia collage and tempera paint stick lesson would be lovely (and ready to take home at the end of 45 minutes with no drying time needed). We have many potential collection tie ins to the theme of storytelling, but one that comes to mind (and a favorite piece of mine to talk about with students) is “Awakening” by Will Barnet This piece works well for vibrant, colorful collage work and is a lot of fun to talk about. Barnett tells the story of his own family in a visually interesting and unique way, and I like seeing students create their own abstract families, along with their hobbies and relationships, on paper.
