The Minot-Sleeper Library seeks a personable and motivated individual, who is tech-savvy, and is knowledgeable or has interest in learning the organization and functions of a public library. The assistant will perform a variety of duties, including: circulation of library materials, assisting patrons with the use of library and their own personal technology, answering general reference questions, providing support to the interlibrary loan librarian, as well as the children’s librarian, and assisting the director with clerical work as needed. Knowledge of and enthusiasm for STEM activities, and maker spaces is desired. A service-oriented attitude and ability to work with all ages is a must. Candidate should have a positive personality and the ability to stay cheerful in a fast-paced work environment.
Essential job functions:
Assists patrons at the circulation desk by creating new accounts, checking materials in and out, placing holds, answering general reference questions, and responding to inquiries via telephone and email
Assists patrons with the use of library and their own personal technology
Helps patrons locate library materials
Organizes and shelves library materials according to the library’s organization systems
Assists the interlibrary loan librarian with requests and processing as needed
Assists the youth librarian with STEM activities and other children’s and young adult programming
Contributes to staff meetings and planning
Performs clerical duties as needed
Excellent interpersonal communication skills
Knowledge of and ability to instruct others on the use of technological devices and software
Knowledge of or ability to learn classification systems used to organize library materials
Ability to professionally assist patrons in retrieving resources available in the library and online
Ability to respond to a variety of situations resourcefully and with courtesy
Willingness to learn practices and processes that relate to daily library operations
Ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently
Experience working in a public library or another customer service setting
Knowledge of current library technologies
Knowledge of popular children’s, young adult, and adult literature
Interest in growing professionally in the library science field
